Indian utilities’ April-May thermal coal imports up 9.6% on year
1,727views 2015-06-24 14:18Indian power utilities imported 15.9 million mt of thermal coal in April-May 2015, a year-on-year increase of 9.6%, according to latest Central Electricity Authority data seen by Platts.
Of the total, 8.3 million mt coal was imported by 37 utilities for blending while 7.6 million mt was imported by nine utilities for power plants which just blend imported coal.
Private-sector power producer Adani Power imported the highest thermal coal shipments for the first two months of the current fiscal year at 2.9 million mt.
For the 2015-16 fiscal year, utilities are set to import 115 million mt of thermal coal.
Of this, 73 million mt would be for those plants, which blend imported coal with domestic coal, with the remaining 42 million mt will be imported by those plants which use only imported coal.
During 2014-15 utilities imported 91.24 million mt coal against a target of 94 million mt.
